I include here some info on R. See sites at the end of the message.
The main site in Austria is having problems these days but should
be back to normality soon.

What are R and CRAN?

R, also known as `GNU S', is a system for statistical computation and
graphics. It consists of a language plus
a run-time environment with graphics, a debugger, access to certain
system functions, and the ability to run
programs stored in script files. R implements a language which is not
entirely unlike the S language developed
at AT&T Bell Laboratories by Rick Becker, John Chambers and Allan Wilks.
Indeed in the absence of an R
manual, you can (mostly) get along by using the S manual.

The design of R has been heavily influenced by two existing languages:
Becker, Chambers & Wilks' S and
Sussman's Scheme. Whereas the resulting language is very similar in
appearance to S, the underlying
implementation and semantics are derived from Scheme. See the R FAQ for a
discussion of the differences
between R and S.

R is available as Free Software under the terms of the Free Software
Foundation's GNU General Public
License. It comes in source code form for UNIX and will compile and run
out of the box on a wide variety of
UNIX platforms (including FreeBSD and LINUX). A version for Windows 95/NT
can be obtained as
binary, and a version for the Power Macintosh is under development.

CRAN is a network of ftp and web servers around the world that store
identical, up-to-date, versions of
code and documentation for the R statistical package. Please use the CRAN
site nearest to you to minimise
network load.
