Just a very short comment in connection with the format discussion: is GML
- the OpenGIS Geography Markup Language - an XML encoding of the OCG
simple features - any use as an intermediary? It is described in OGC RFC
13-Dec-1999, based on 99-082r2, and can be found at:

http://www.opengis.org/techno/rfc11info.htm

including opportunities to comment. The authors include people from
MapInfo and Oracle among others. The spec. also mentions SVG as part of
the XML family - Scalable Vector Graphics, and is probably mostly aimed at
web use, since the request was issued by the WWW Mapping Special Interest
Group.
