maybe I am a step further... luckily I have found this page:
http://www.met.ed.ac.uk/~hcp/hdf5notes.txt

which describes how to compile:
HDF5 lib and
HDF-EOS both on Linux (which is not yet officially supported)
and gctp  (requirement)

Now I have to find a converter to convert HDF-EOS to something
useful using above libs. If anyone can assist, please contact me.
