Glynn,

I want to thank you for all your help. I went ahead and worked with the 
gdal source file and finally got it to compile. Moving ft2build.h into 
the freetype2 directory did the trick.

With your advice I now have a CVS snapshot of GRASS compiling in the 
background as I write this. Thanks again.
