[GRASSLIST:1934] Modeling topographic changes in GRASS-5

Has anyone developed the algorithm for examining alternative changes to
topography? Specifically, I want to model alternative mine plans starting
with the existing topography in a DEM. I would then like to consider the
effects of surface mining in different sequences or depths; overburden and
rock placement effects based on location, footprint, height and slope; road
locations and other factors that affect topography, hydraulics, visual
aesthetics and other concerns.

I know that this would involve creating masks of various types and
overlaying them (via map algebra) on the original DEM, but I haven't started
to work out all the details. I hope to avoid re-inventing the wheel.

Thanks,

Rich
