[GRASSLIST:4089] colors in raster?

I'm sure this is a simple question...

When I'm trying to render a raster file (imported from an e00) file, the
colors for the cells are all the same. How do I render classes of cells
using the same color? I've tried the following...

r.colors map=mac10dem col=grey
d.rast mac10dem

and the map is entirely red. What am I missing? This is on a win2k/cygwin
machine as well.
