How did you create the location? From the GRASS startup screen? Don't
try to create it manually.

Don't directly add, remove or modify files in the GRASS database
directory.

Programs which operate on files rather than GRASS maps (e.g. *.in.*
and *.out.* programs) will look for them in the current directory
unless a full pathname is specified.

You don't need to know anything about the contents of /home/grassdata. 
Or, at least, you shouldn't need to know.
