[GRASSLIST:3682] e00 to vect to rast to xyz. Ug!

Hello,

I have performed the following steps on an e00 arc/info export file.
1) m.in.e00
2) v.support
3) renamed desired dig_cat file
4) v.support
5) v.reclass  (keeping the same categories. somehow this labels the
categories)
6) v.support
7) v.to.rast

When I d.what.vect/rast the maps they report the category number(139) and
the attribute string
e.g.:  2722558.07306985(E) 1927619.33955939(N)
        ec_010305 in EastCoast  (139)9+_3_6_1_ at _@_7_5_4_ at _@_4_5_4_ at _@_@

When I d.legend the raster map the legend is labelled only with the category
numbers.
I can't get it to label with the attribute string.

Similary r.out.xyz outputs the category numbers as the cell data.
Using r.stat -1gl also outputs the category numbers as the cell data.

How do I non-interactively get GRASS to treat the attribute strings as the
data 
so I can r.out.xyz and not get the category numbers as the data values?
