Changing a projection in raster data is always a complicated task.
You have to be aware of the mechanisms to judge your data quality
for this operations AFAIK.

This looks like a bug. You need to give more details to the developers
so that they might be able to track that bug.  Check:

Adding more swapspace will help.
The low memory modes were more useful in history when cheap memory
and disks were not available.
