In my opinion, the length of 50 characters are too restrictive,
considering most configurations of file system in modern machines.
No possibility to relieve the restriction?

You can't; the interactive startup imposes a 50-character limit upon
the database directory.

However, you can avoid that limit by using the non-interactive
startup, i.e.

	grass5 /path/to/database/location/mapset
