It might also be worth looking at Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), which is 
free (at http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/).  It sounds pretty good, but I 
haven't tried it out yet.  Does anyone here have any experience with 
it, and a sense of how it compares to grass?
