My 2 cents worth,
My experience with the MrSid viewer was somewhat different from what
Lowell is saying. I used a WIN based MrSid viewer to export the image
as a TIF with corresponding TFW file. It worked quite well, except for
one problem. The TIF image game to be drastically larger than the SID
file, obviously because of the compression. And with my luck, was not
the most convenient to open with GRASS (be it the file size, or my
computer speed). I was dealing with TIF sizes of 1GB plus. Not the
best for using in GRASS!!

Good luck!
