[GRASSLIST:5727] Newbie signing on

I've just joined GRASSLIST. I happen to live in greater Los Angeles and
am interested in exploring free GIS simply because the cost of learning
the industry leader is simply beyond my financial means, and I'm learning
that it strains the financial resources of even small-to-medium size
corporate clients who would like to develop in-house GIS capabilities, so
I think learning GRASS can be other than a personal indulgence. 

The fact that the software is cost-free and open should add value to
consulting ventures I may undertake.  I hope to find ways to "give back"
to the GRASS community as my association deepens and matures.

Lately I've been using Maptitude for vector GIS and MicroDEM for raster. 
My impression is that there's significant overlap between GRASS and
MicroDEM, perhaps less overlap with Maptitude.
