I have compiled 5.7 under cygwin from the 2003_09_27 cvs snapshot and 
prepared a binary distribution which I have placed at:
    http://www.greenwoodmap.com/grass/
It was configured:
    --with-gd=no \
    --with-tcltk=yes \
    --with-opengl=yes \
    --with-odbc=no \
    --with-fftw=no \
    --with-gdal=no \
    --with-postgres=yes \
    --with-blas=no \
    --with-lapack=no \
    --with-freetype=no \
    --with-motif=no \
    --with-png=no

patience with my questions.
