I can not directly answer your question, but I think r.in.gdal is a better 
way to import tiff's, and just about any other raster data.

Off topic - are you really with Backpacker Magazine? I was a Pacific Crest 
Trail and Appalachian Trail thru hiker in a past life, so your email 
address caught my eye.
