Look in config.log; there should be a group of lines like:

	configure:721: checking for gcc
	configure:825: checking whether the C compiler (gcc -g ) works
	configure:841: gcc -o conftest -g   conftest.c  1>&5

If there were any error messages, they will follow the above lines.
