In GRASS 5.3 you can use s.kernal. In both GRASS 5.3 and 5.7, I think that
r.le.patch will also work as there is an option to calculate density of a
given attribute (e.g., sites) by patch (a set of predefined landscape
analysis units).
There may be other ways in GRASS 5.7. I played around with r.statistics but
didn't get the results I expected (but it was late and I didn't take a lot
of time). This is an important function that needs to be implemented for
archaeology and a variety of other fields.
