[GRASSLIST:4475] help for installing grass53

This is my first time trying to compile grass.
I do not have root permission and I want to install grass53 in my
personal space.
I download grass53 source code to /scratch2/grass/grass-5.3.0/
This is my configure option setting:
./configure --prefix=/afs/isis/depts/geog/course1/grass/

DONE generating GRASS GIS binary code
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can run grass53, but could not get d.mon start=x0 working for me.
And I found out the reason is - mon.start was not there (under /etc). I
can only find
mon.list, mon.select and mon.release. Is there any way I can fix this?
Or do I have
to have root access to be able to compile grass53? Any help and
suggestion will be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.
