What gcc are you using? I'm asking because I had almost identical errors 
with gcc 3.4.1 on Mandrake 10.1. See 
http://grass.itc.it/pipermail/grass5/2005-January/017014.html. After 
switching to 3.3.4 all went fine (though no idea why).
