[GRASSLIST:5273] grass installation and ogdi

I would like to switch from ArcInfo to GRASS for the analysis of wildlife data, but am having difficulty installing it on Linux Mandrake 10.1. 

When I try to install grass 5.7, 5.4, or 5.0 I receive a message similar to the following:
Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected:
gdal-python-1.2.2-2thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libgdal1[==1.2.2]) libgdal1-1.2.2-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libogdi31.so)

When I found the package ogdi and tried to install it I continually receive the message:
Some package requested cannot be installed:
ogdi-3.1.2-1mdk.src.rpm (due to unsatisfied zlib-devel) OR (unsatisfied libzlib for ogdi-3.1.2-1mdk.i586.rpm)

Thus, installation of GRASS appears to depend on the zlib, which seems to install just fine although I'm not sure how to test that.

I've tried a couple versions of the grass, odgi, and zlib's without success.  Here's the list of packages I have.

I'm installing these by using the root console and typing:
> urpmi ogdi-3.1.2-1mdk.i586.rpm

I would be grateful for any help on how to fix this problem.  I'm new to Linux and am open to using a different operating system.
