If the .lac format is not recognized properly, this
should be reported to the GDAL people (http://gdal.org).

Concerning i.rectify: It won't work well as using
polynomials to rectify the long AVHRR stripes doesn't
perform well (I got some 25km shifts).

Note that GDAL was extended two weeks ago to support
thin spline warping. Using 'gdalwarp' you should be
now able to rectify the NOAA data *before* importing
them into GRASS. For details see

This new method was finanzed by VISRT Inc and Centro di Ecologia Alpina
here in Trento.
