Dave,
The PostGIS support / PostGRASS was experimental AFAIK and was removed 
before GRASS 6.0 stable was released. Too much of a performance penalty 
compared with native GRASS geometry storage; the opposing methodologies 
of topological (GRASS) / non-topological (OpenGIS) geometry 
representation also made things complicated I think.
