[GRASSLIST:6275] recalculating area and perimeter & v.db.connect

Dear GRASS listserve,

I have a couple of basic questions: 

1) How do I recalculate area and perimeter of a polygon layer?

2) I know that v.db.connect is notoriously touchy.  I can't get it to function.  Is there a detailed list/FAQ on how to get it to work properly?
