Wn Grass 6.01 v.patch will do for merging geometry only, v.append for
both geometry and datatables.

However, v.append is slow which is a pain for big datasets.

In Grass61 Radim Blazek has recently added merging datatables
functionality to v.patch, kudos to him. It should be faster than
v.append. To use, you would need to fetch the source code from CVS and
compile it, or wait for the next CVS binary snapshot, generated weekly.
