Hello,

Well, my suggestion is any Debian based distro (including Debian of
course!). BTW: Attention: Ubuntu is not following Debian anymore, so it's
not very compatible.

Debian (the original) may be not so easy do install. But using the DebianGIS
repository is very easy to install/upgrade GRASS (and other related
softwares like QGIS).

Also, using Debian's Apt-Get or Synaptic is very easy to install
dependencies for compile GRASS from the source code.

So, try to use a Linux distro that have a internet option install/upgrade to
GRASS. In my opinion is the better choice for newbies.

Feel free to write directly for some help.

Cheers,
