Just thought that I would share some nice results from r.sun.
Comparing the daily summed insolation values modeled by r.sun with 2 years of
solar data from the exact same spot revealed a nice correlation between the
two:

Note the Linke turbidity values: they empirically monthly averages- and were
key to tracking the actual insolation values so closely. Also, the default
Linke value of 3 used for the entire year tracked the variation in measured
values well, but overestimated the actual values.
