Ian,

I don't have an answer for you, but using Lorenzo Moretti's GRASS 6.1cvs 
(binary distribution) version for Mac OS X, I get the same error as you 
do. I tried doing many different things to get it to work for several 
hours with no avail. However, on a Linux machine which I built from the 
GRASS 6.1cvs source dated 21 January 2006, I have no such problem.

So, there is a problem somewhere; unfortunately it seems to be like 
tracking down an electrical short…
