Start GRASS in text mode to avoid running gis.m; you can start d.m
from ~/.grass.bashrc.

gis.m uses a separate region for display commands and the
georectifier. AFAICT, other commands run from the menus should use the
normal region (although it's debatable whether this is a good idea).
