[GRASSLIST:10789] problem upgrading FWTools to handle ECW

Hello

I'm trying to upgrade the version of FWTools that is used with GRASS, so
that r.in.gdal can handle ECW format files.  Until now I have been using
FWTools-0.9.4 without problems, but am now trying FWTools-1.0.0a7 to get
the ECW support.  However, on running the GRASS configure script, it fails
on gdal, as it gives an error on the GDALOpen test.  The call to configure is:

./configure --without-postgres --without-odbc --without-fftw
--with-gdal=/usr/local/FWTools-1.0.0a7/bin_safe/gdal-config
--with-proj-includes=/usr/local/FWTools-1.0.0a7/include
--with-proj-libs=/usr/local/FWTools-1.0.0a7/lib

and the error message is:

checking for gdal-config... /usr/local/FWTools-1.0.0a7/bin_safe/gdal-config
checking for GDALOpen... no
checking for GDALOpen... no
configure: error: *** Unable to locate GDAL library

I've set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to /usr/local/FWTools-1.0.0a7/lib and
have run ldconfig with ld.so.conf modified to point to the above.  Running
GRASS 6.0.2 on Redhat 7.3.  The gdal_translate program lists ECW as an
accepted format in FWTools-1.0.0a7, but not on the older 0.9.4 version that
I had been using.
