I'd like to suggest also VisIt http://www.llnl.gov/visit/home.html
It's under a BSD license and it can read GDAL formats (so maybe also
GRASS files w/o having to convert) and VTK.

I've never tried it but it sounds promising.

Let us know if someone happens to use it.
