Hi,
I am also new to GRASS and had a similar problem.  This is what I did to get
it to work.  Try the following in the x-terminal:

grass62 -text ~/GISDBASE/LOCATION/MAPSET

where GISDBASE is the path to the directory that contains the spearfish
database and LOCATION='spearfish60', MAPSET='user1'
This should open GRASS in text mode.  you can then type 'gis.m' to open the
gui windows.  Further details are in the linked thread:
