Thanks for the suggestion Maciej.
OSSIM sounds very promising (from what I've read so far). Till today I
never managed to get OSSIM running under Ubuntu. I've seen it only under
some win-boxes and partially running under wine. But it's probably an
adventure to compile it properly.
