The open source VTK viewer Visit can import GDAL/OGR supported data
directly (including SRTM HGT):
https://wci.llnl.gov/codes/visit/
From there, you can export as a VTK dataset.
I'd love to have a GDAL/OGR reader in ParaView though, as I think
that it has a much better UI.
