Yes.

Python will be a dependency of GRASS 7, meaning that everyone with  
GRASS can use it. It makes a lot of scripting tasks easier than they  
are with shell scripts and means that we can avoid having to bring in  
additional external utilities like grep and awk (whose implementation  
varies across platforms, sometimes giving unexpected results).

Many kudos to Glynn for getting this process well underway.
