I just checked in an update which allows the volcano to have a crater.
screenshot attached of fully artificial GRASS landscape, commands given
as an example in the help page.
 (r.mapcalc "r.surf.fractal + r.surf.volcano")

.... now where's that wiki page on GRASS + POVray?
