/home/<username>/Desktop/
on Linux

C\:Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop\
on Windows

Neither of these is the same like $GISDBASE/$LOCATION_NAME/$MAPSET/dbf/, 
you must set database=<Desktop folder>, otherwise v.in.db can't find the 
table.
