No need to give up on 64bit, I am using it like many others here.

Please post the result of
file /usr/local/lib/libgdi.so

I get
/usr/local/lib/libgdi.so: symbolic link to
`/usr/lib64/python2.5/site-packages/wx-2.8-gtk2-unicode/wx/_gdi_.so'

As you see it links to the 64bit version of _gdi_.so.

Perhaps you linked the 32bit version?
