This is not clear to me. I have used this new module and
it requires a gstat installation within R, so in my experience it
did not need to compile gstat with GRASS support but just
installed the gstat-R extension.
Perhaps you could try that?
But: there is a backport missing of some wxPython feature so
it may be possible that for the GUI version only GRASS 6.5 or
later works.
