could you describe the method? is it just an extraction of

Not exactly, is an extraction of the category 5  (forest) from the
landclass96 image

r.mapcalc 'forest1996 = if (landclass96 == 5, 1, null())'

But the behaviour doesn't change if you choose the category 5  of the
landcover_1m
