Maybe need to check the connection one more time?
$ eval $(g.gisenv)
$ db.connect driver=dbf database='$GISDBASE/$LOCATION_NAME/$MAPSET/dbf/'
$ db.connect -p
$ db.tables -p

And then:
$ v.db.connect -p contours
-------------- next part --------------
