You go to
http://eca.knmi.nl/dailydata/index.php
-> E-OBS gridded version of the ECA dataset (netCDF)
   --> accept & register
        --> download
              --> 0.25 deg. regular grid

This is in netCDF format, so your GDAL installation needs to have that
driver enabled. In this case r.in.gdal will read the data right away.
