[winGRASS] error: location

i actually almost got grass to work in cygwin, but i can't get it to open
any of the spearfish files
i keep getting the following error message:
"error: location
the selected location is not a valid GRASS location"
i've been able to get it to work farther than this in linux, but have
trouble saving files for later use in windows
is there a way to bypass this "open existing files" stage by going directly
into grass the way i can in linux, to simply import dxf files...?
