[GRASS-windows] Advanced layout possible?

Hi

I wonder whether it is possible to create rather advanced layout maps in
winGRASS?
E.g. similar to this map (ArcMap production):

I am able to produce simple PNG maps through PNG DRIVER, but cannot figure
out to set in overview maps and customize scalebar etc. I struggled a bit
with d.frame but cannot make it work

Any comments or directions (external software, tutorials) to go?
