Excellent initiative Marco. May i request all who are taking part in various Geo events (Geography Awareness Week, GIS day etc ) to also make use of the opportunity to promote OSGeo Education activities by sharing information on Geo4All and welcoming those interested to be part of this. Also it will be good to give away OSGeo Live DVDs , promotional materials etc at these events.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear all,
I am happy to inform that our GeoForAll lab - GEOlab (Geomatics and Earth Observation laboratory) at Politecnico di Milano will host a mapathon on November 19 during the OpenStreetMap Geography Awareness Week. During the event we will have a live Skype with Tyler Radford and Cristiano Giovando from HOT (thank you very much for taking time for this!), who will first introduce OSM GeoWeek and HOT activities and then present the mapping task we will work on.
Please find the full description of the event on the OSM GeoWeek website [1] and the Politecnico di Milano website [2].
If you live in Italy and close to Milan don't miss this opportunity!
Best,

Marco

Yes, definitely, good point, if it is set up as an event during a specific week once or twice a year, the participation will grow!

This is the case of GIS Day here in Denver. We have 3-4 classes presenting their GIS work every year.

Thank you
Rafael

Thanks Rafael and this is very good point. Fully agree that it is easier for everyone if we can plan recurring events in advance.

Tyler - can you please confirm that OSM Geo Week will be planned at the same time every year. That way, it not only helps us all in planning student activities etc in advance but also it will get bigger over the years.

Hi everyone,
Tyler, thank you for organizing and leading this extremely valuable activity.

I have forwarded info to the students and faculty in our FOSS4G lab to see how we can put together a team to participate.

Kind suggestion: It would be helpful to have recurring events in a calendar that would allow us all to plan way in advance. You know how it goes in universities, many events and activities, faculty and students’ calendars very load.

If set it up as a recurring event during a specific time of the year we can make a habit of participating. For example, we have plan in GIS courses to set up work that we can shows in GIS Day every year second week of November.

Thank you
Rafael

Tyler - Thank you for sharing this info. on OSM Geo Week . I will also share this info through my wider networks.

All - Maria Brovelli, Peter Mooney and myself had a telemeeting earlier today with Tyler and we see huge synergies for working together for supporting the OSM Geo week and also help with the Missing Maps project. I request all our colleagues to contribute to this OSM Geo Week and also support the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team. Peter Mooney will be the key contact from Geo4All for this, so if your university is planning any activities for OSM Geo Week please let Peter (email - peter.mooney at nuim.ie<mailto:peter.mooney at nuim.ie> ) know.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear all,

November 15th is OSM Geo Week http://osmgeoweek.org/ and presents a great opportunity for those in your university to come together and map to prepare communities for the next disaster as part of the Missing Maps project.

The objective of Missing Maps is simple: to map the most vulnerable places in the developing world so that local and international NGOs, communities and individuals can use the maps and the data to better respond to crises affecting the areas. The project seeks to literally and figuratively put people, and their communities, on the map.

Represent your university during OSM Geo Week anytime between November 15th-21st as we remotely map areas for projects by various NGOs working in the most vulnerable places around the world. We’ll even send you some swag!

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team and our Missing Maps partners would really like to do GeoWeek in a huge way this year and get 100 mapping parties, mapathons, mappy hours and mapternoons happening around the world.

Tasks are already being planned for Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Kenya, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa to name a few, and will directly support forthcoming Missing Maps efforts on the ground. If this sounds like something you would be interested in supporting, our team can provide you with all of the materials and remote support needed to host a successful mapathon.

If you have ever thought it might be fun to get together with co-workers, friends, students and/or strangers to share your enthusiasm for the power of maps and make a difference while doing it, GeoWeek is the perfect time to do it. Events can be any size, some mapathons were as small as 10 people and as large as a 150 people. Anyone can do it and we have all the materials to help you host your mapathon.
