[Landsat-pds] landsat scenes pre 2017

Hi Leah, sorry for the slow reply. USGS switched over to Collection 1 some time ago and the data on S3 spans both Pre-Collection and Collection 1. https://landsatonaws.com is only showing Collection 1 data, which is why you’re seeing it only go back so far in time. You can find data farther back in time if you’re will to use the Pre-Collection data. You can use the https://aws.amazon.com/cli/ to search through this imagery with a command like

aws s3 ls landsat-pds/L8/043/034/

which will show you all the Pre-Collection imagery available. You can also use a very simple web interface to browse the data at http://landsat-pds.s3.amazonaws.com/L8/index.html, which will also be Pre-Collection imagery.

Our goal in the future is to have the full Collection 1 archive for all the missions available on AWS.

When I try to grab landsat data from AWS (this is for a class), I am able to “see” scenes back to 2017. However the metadata tell me there should be data back to 2015.

Example: https://landsatonaws.com/L8/043/034/ <- notice that the data only go back to mar 2017.
Are there data stored in another location or are older data only available in certain areas?
