eek, we have only built and tested on gcc 4.0+

I would note there is a 1.2 release of libLAS available, but I doubt  
it resolves this issue.  I will look into it.  If you could please  
file a bug at http://liblas.org with this message, I will try to  
investigate it as soon as possible.
