I'm not sure how to say the same thing with Martin's tools, but I'm sure it has something, and I suspect it works without rewriting the file as libLAS' tools do (lasinfo?)

yep, howard suspects correctly. with lasinfo from LAStools you avoid the full rewrite. the syntax - although similar - is different:

lasinfo -i lidar.las  -auto_creation

or

lasinfo -i lidar.las  -set_file_creation 8 2007
