thanks for this advice. What I want to do is to query the database for a 
list of companies that should then be displayed in the map. I am using 
an application called msCross where the layers of the mapfile are 
directly displayed. What I see is that it displays the layers of the 
mapfile directly and does not send a WMS request (if I am right...). It 
would be quite a long  request  string to ask for  e.g. 10 000 company 
ids (btw: Is this possible at all?) or am I thinking in the wrong 
direction here?
