Hello,
you are probably referring to tile cache implementations. Mapbender does not support them yet and they are not yet fully standardized either but there are a few solutions. Two proposals how to do this have come from the OSGeo community and two versions are currently being discussed in the OGC. 

You may want to check out OpenLayers and ka.map for more information on currently working software.
