Just to respond to this:  Frank has done a lot of work in the last while to enhance the provider's performance.  Unfortunately, the FDO "contract" is still fairly opaque, so without testing against the primary clients it's hard to tell what will work.  
 
Haris isn't working on the GDAL provider directly, but he has been instrumental in tracking down issues between MapGuide and the provider.  For instance, one of the keys to getting the tile stuff working properly was to rename the geometry property from Raster to Image :)
